A new type of mpox, clade 1b, is deadlier with higher transmission rates. Mortality rates can be as high as 10%, raising concerns of a 'high-risk' situation in Central Africa.
Clade I mpox is more virulent in the Congo Basin, with mortality rates of around 3%. Clade II caused the 2022 global outbreak, less severe but more contagious, with a survival rate above 99.9%.
