The U.S. Department of Agriculture's $1 billion strategy aims to tackle the avian influenza crisis impacting egg prices and poultry farms. This plan includes easing regulations for backyard coops to support farmers. Meanwhile, the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain poses a serious threat to certain pets, particularly cats, where two-thirds of infected animals may die. Precautions, such as keeping cats indoors and avoiding raw food, are vital to protect pets from the virus, especially those living near poultry or dairy farms.
The current circulating strain of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza is particularly deadly in cats, with around two thirds of those infected dying.
Dogs can be infected but seem to be more resistant to illness; if they were as susceptible as cats, we would have seen more cases.
