Two more cases of dengue virus in Baldwin Park raises total to five, sparking concerns among health officials about local spread of the mosquito-borne illness.
"Many people infected may not show symptoms, making it challenging to detect and control the spread of the disease," said Los Angeles Public Health Officer Muntu Davis.
Aedes mosquitoes, while not common in L.A. County, are responsible for transmitting dengue, becoming infected after biting infected individuals and continuing the cycle.
Flulike symptoms of dengue can appear two to seven days after infection, with critical symptoms leading to severe complications and risk of organ failure.
