At least two human cases of the new so-called 'dual mutant' strains of H1N1 influenza have been detected in U.S. patients, with genetic changes that could cut the effectiveness of the main flu antiviral.
An analysis of the new H1N1 flu viruses with concerning mutations I223V and S247N, which raise resistance to oseltamivir, was published.
Despite rapid spread globally, the mutations remain rare. Over 100 sequences from various continents submitted, comprising less than 1% of flu virus sequences.
CDC closely monitors flu virus mutations, including those affecting the commonly prescribed antiviral oseltamivir, due to potential impact on control and treatment strategies.
