The WHO declared the rise in mpox cases a global health emergency amid concerns about a new strain, mpox Clade 1, spreading across Africa and beyond.
As of August 20, 2024, DRC reported over 16,000 mpox cases this year, highlighting a significant escalation from 2023, linked to the new strain.
Professor Susan Hopkins stated, 'It is vital we respond to recent rises in cases... Vaccination is key to reducing the severity of symptoms and preventing transmission.'
Vaccination in the UK is aimed at those most likely to be exposed to mpox, primarily gay, bisexual men, and staff at sex venues.
