California Governor declares 'proactive' state of emergency as bird flu spreads through dairy cows

"California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency over the H5N1 avian influenza virus as it spreads rapidly through US dairy cattle herds, confirmed in 16 states."

"This proclamation is a targeted action to ensure government agencies have the resources and flexibility they need to respond quickly to this outbreak," Newsom stated, emphasizing the need for preparedness.

"While the risk to the public remains low, we will continue to take all necessary steps to prevent the spread of this virus," Newsom stated, highlighting ongoing caution.

"The FDA has reassured consumers that grocery-shelf beef and dairy remain safe but advised against consuming raw milk which may harbor harmful microorganisms."
