San Diego County is experiencing a serious flu season, with three unvaccinated teenagers dying from the illness this winter. Health officials report that approximately 80% of local youth aged 5-17 lack current flu vaccinations, highlighting the need for urgent immunization. The state has also registered numerous pediatric flu deaths, prompting officials to emphasize the importance of vaccination as the flu season peaks. Health experts warn of high flu activity and encourage families to prioritize flu shots to mitigate health risks during this ongoing health crisis.
According to a press release issued late last week by the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, a 15-year-old boy died on Dec. 31, a 17-year-old girl died on Jan. 5, and a 14-year-old girl died on Jan. 22.
These recent flu deaths among our youth are tragic and concerning as we head into what historically is the peak of flu season," said county interim public health officer Dr. Ankita Kadakia in a statement.
