Victoria is experiencing a significant increase in Buruli ulcer cases, which, although known in Australia since the 1940s, is no longer limited to coastal areas.
Chief Health Officer Prof Ben Cowie highlighted that the Buruli ulcer, which typically starts with a painless bump or wound, presents a growing risk to the community.
Buruli ulcer notifications are particularly high in individuals over 60, making awareness and prompt treatment critical for minimizing health impacts.
Preventive measures include using insect repellents and wearing light clothing to avoid infection, especially as cases have been on the rise in suburban areas.
