As Measles Cases Mount in the U.S., What's the Situation Worldwide?
Briefly

The U.S. reported its first measles death since 2015 from an outbreak in Texas, indicating a decline in vaccination rates. Texas has 124 cases reported while New Mexico has nine. Experts attribute this decline to decreased measles vaccination rates globally post-COVID-19. In 2024, measles cases in the U.S. nearly doubled from 2023, a concern for health authorities. Globally, an estimated 10.3 million were infected in 2023, primarily affecting unvaccinated individuals, particularly in low-income regions. Outbreaks increased in 57 countries, especially in Africa and the Middle East.
"Measles anywhere is a threat everywhere," the U.S. Centers for Disease Control say on their website.
