The mpox outbreak is still not under control and is on an upward trend, with 19 African countries reporting cases and over 1,100 deaths since January.
Africa CDC chief Ngashi Ngongo emphasized the urgent need for political and financial support, warning that the mpox crisis might surpass COVID-19 if not addressed.
Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, spreads from infected animals to humans and through close contact, causing severe symptoms and posing significant public health risks.
Central Africa is the hardest-hit region, accounting for 85.7% of mpox cases and 99.5% of deaths across the continent, highlighting regional health system vulnerabilities.
