Each soup was warmed on the stove, placed in identical bowls with brands written on Post-it notes stuck to the bottoms, and assigned numbers to ensure blind tasting. Tasting proceeded in order with observations of vegetables, chicken pieces, noodle texture, and separate sipping of the broth. Six brands were in tin cans and one, Rao's, was in a glass jar. Rao's Homemade ranked first for a shelf-stable homemade profile; Campbell's Chunky was a strong runner-up; Progresso placed third for a thicker, meatier spoonful.
