Chaos Consumes USAID as State Department Moves to Send Overseas Staffers Home
Briefly

Amid efforts by Elon Musk's DOGE team to dismantle USAID, employees stationed abroad are facing serious uncertainty. Reports suggest that many will be called back to the US, with some having their access to email and systems abruptly cut off. Concerns have been raised about their safety and logistics for their return, as leadership moves to compile lists of overseas workers. New foreign assistance director Pete Marocco is coordinating efforts to evacuate staff, potentially with military support, as the agency's HQ remains closed while operations are in turmoil.
"Everybody is rightfully very concerned for our overseas staff that are essentially just being left stranded," a current USAID employee in the US told WIRED.
On Tuesday, Pete Marocco, the State Department's newly appointed foreign assistance director, convened with senior leaders and instructed them to bring all overseas employees back to the US.
USAID leadership attempted to compile a list of overseas employees worldwide on Monday, indicating the urgency of the situation.
Some USAID employees still connected to their email accounts received notice that the agency's Washington, DC headquarters would remain closed for the remainder of the week.
