"In 2015, Redditors began asking who was behind the design - it had previously been a mystery. Their detective work attracted news outlets, too, and after some teamwork, a reporter named Thomas Gounley tracked Ekiss down."
Sweetheart Cup Company sought a new cup design in 1989 and held an employee contest. The design needed broad appeal and had to be simple because the printing press could handle only two colors and limited detail. The company was also transitioning to digital printing, while many people lacked computer design experience, and Gina Ekiss had that skill. Ekiss created the purple and turquoise zig-zag motif, named it “Jazz,” and Sweetheart selected it for production in 1991. Ekiss was paid as an employee but received no bonus or royalties. In 2015, online sleuths investigated the design’s creator, and a reporter later tracked Ekiss down, leading to recognition for her work.
