This part of SF is 'weirdly free of cafes.' Dave Eggers wants to fix that.
"Acclaimed Bay Area author Dave Eggers' plans to transform the long-vacant Pier 29 into a hub for artists have now expanded to include coffee. Art + Water, a new arts nonprofit from Eggers and San Francisco artist JD Beltran, is expected to create free studio space for artists, a gallery space and a pop-up cafe from roaster Mokhtar Alkhanshali in the sprawling warehouse, Eggers shared in a post on McSweeney's."
"'For years, Mokhtar's been talking about creating a comfortable, 19th-century-style coffee experience where visitors can luxuriate in a space filled with rugs, pillows, tapestries, silver, copper, and gold,' Eggers wrote. 'Not a Spartan coffee shop where you get your email; this will be something slower and provisional, something more elegant and free of screens and stress, but full of the smell of good food and good coffee.'"
Art + Water is a new nonprofit from Dave Eggers and San Francisco artist JD Beltran planning to reuse Pier 29's warehouse for arts programming. The project aims to provide free studio space for artists, a gallery, and a pop-up café operated by roaster Mokhtar Alkhanshali. Mokhtar founded Port of Mokha and was the first to sell specialty Yemeni coffee in Blue Bottle cafes, and he envisions a craft-focused, leisurely coffee environment. The Community Arts Stabilization Trust says the sublease and pier plans are still being finalized and current lease terms do not yet permit retail food or beverage sales. If approved, the space could open next year with an exhibition on filmmaker and musician Boots Riley.
