Barbara is an RC6300. Born in 1993, she's relatively old for a Risograph printing machine. She lived in a church basement in Beaverton until she was sold for $50 at an estate sale in 2013. A few years later, Barbara landed in the Kerns neighborhood at the Risograph print shop and studio Outlet-the shop's first, though Outlet founder Kate Bingaman-Burt has since added three Riso sisters to the family: Janet, Corita, and Lil' Tina.
People really show up for the arts here. Our event is run by artists in the building. It's been growing so much over the past few years. This year has been very very busy, it's crazy.
Acclaimed Bay Area author Dave Eggers' plans to transform the long-vacant Pier 29 into a hub for artists have now expanded to include coffee. Art + Water, a new arts nonprofit from Eggers and San Francisco artist JD Beltran, is expected to create free studio space for artists, a gallery space and a pop-up cafe from roaster Mokhtar Alkhanshali in the sprawling warehouse, Eggers shared in a post on McSweeney's.
Some of us lost a whole lifetime of work. It's not something you can just replace. I don't have the words for the feeling because I'm still in such shock. It doesn't really feel like it's happened yet.
A fire ripped through a 19th-century warehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn, late Wednesday, collapsing parts of the building and wiping out dozens of artist studios ahead of a major neighborhood open studios weekend. Reports say the blaze began around 11:35pm at 481 Van Brunt Street, near the waterfront. Flames quickly spread through the four-story structure, forcing firefighters to pull back and attack the blaze from outside.
The blaze broke out at 481 Van Brunt St., which houses dozens of artist studios and small businesses, at around 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 17, officials said. Flames quickly engulfed the top floors of the building and spread to the roof, forcing firefighters to evacuate. This type of construction is called heavy timber, it's all wood so, once these structural members start going, the fire takes over rather quickly, said FDNY Assistant Deputy Chief Kevin Woods.
