The Martini, traditionally a cold-weather cocktail, is being reimagined by bartenders who introduce tropical flavors. This fusion allows for warm-weather drinking without losing the Martini's essence. Notable examples include the Turf Club with pineapple-infused gin and the Green Mango Martini featuring mango-infused tequila at Superbueno. The trend continues with innovative takes around the world, such as the Tiny Sparrow Martini, which blends Vietnamese gin with calamansi liqueur. Bartenders are exploring how to pair tropical flavors with the classic Martini, making it more versatile for the summer months.
Tropical flavors pair well with Martinis more than people realize," says Jordan Valls, bar manager at Palomar in Portland, Oregon, and an alum of Punch's own.
Perhaps the most at-home friendly foray into the tropical Martini realm, however, comes from Kitty Bernardo, beverage director at New York's Paradise Lost and another Best New Bartenders alum.
At Superbueno in New York, the Green Mango Martini calls on a small measure of mango eau de vie paired with a mango-infused tequila base.
The pineapple obviously has the tropical flavor going on, but it truly mellows out the maraschino," he says.
