The Classic Manhattan likely came from a bar - in this case, one named The Manhattan Club in New York City.
The Black Manhattan apparently came to life in 2005 at the hands of bartender Todd Smith. General consensus notes that it happened at the Bourbon & Branch establishment in San Francisco.
