The Chicago White Sox have shifted their top prospect Wikelman González to a bullpen role after he was called up to Triple-A Charlotte. Despite a decent history as a starter in the minors, the team's lack of starting depth prompted this decision. With several top prospects sidelined due to injuries, the organization is taking a new approach by recognizing González's potential as a reliever while maintaining that he could still contribute as a starter in the future. Sox farm director Paul Janish stated González will work through multiple innings in this new role, aiming for versatility.
It's not necessarily going to be one inning [at a time]; it's going to be two to three innings, depending on the pitch count. But the thought there is to get him comfortable with that role.
The same scouting reports that project González as a reliever also provide hope that he could one day be a middle-of-the-rotation pitcher. It's interesting to see Chicago seemingly give up on that upside.
