White Sox claim Mike Vasil off waivers from Rays, release Brandon Drury
Briefly

The Chicago White Sox have strengthened their Opening Day roster by claiming right-hander Mike Vasil off waivers, marking the inclusion of two Rule 5 draft picks. Vasil, 25, previously accumulated a mixed record in the minor leagues but offers potential as both a starter and reliever. Meanwhile, the Sox face challenges due to spring injuries, exacerbating their need for pitching depth. General manager Chris Getz noted that utilizing Vasil could align well with the team's pitching objectives, particularly given the unique circumstances of having two Rule 5 players on the roster.
Vasil, who is 25, was picked by the Phillies from the Mets in the Rule 5 in December, then traded the same day to the Rays in exchange for cash considerations.
To have two Rule 5 picks on a roster is a bit unique, but considering our situation right now where we are as an organization, we felt like this is worth the effort,
Vasil posted a 5.91 ERA in 10 2/3 innings this spring, closing out with three scoreless innings against the Mets.
The Sox' need for depth on the major league roster and organizationally was heightened with multiple pitchers going down with arm injuries this spring.
