Kelly and Gary DeStefano, newlyweds from Haverhill, Massachusetts, shared a memorable moment with Pope Leo XIV when he donned a White Sox hat during his General Audience in St. Peter's Square. This unexpected encounter occurred after the couple aimed to meet the Pontifex during their Rome visit. The couple's light-hearted interaction captured attention, eventually going viral after the White Sox shared the moment on social media. While the team remains focused on the MLB season, manager Will Venable expressed excitement over the Pope's support for the team.
"He laughed when my husband pulled out the hat and jokingly said something in regards to 'we'll be in trouble but [the Pope] won't,'" Kelly DeStefano said.
"If he's a fan and locked into who the manager is, hopefully. But I'm just glad that he's supportive of the White Sox. That's awesome," said manager Will Venable.
"It's great; I love the support. Need it," Venable told reporters.
