In the spring of 1944, the Gowanda High School varsity baseball team made history by going undefeated and winning all nine games on its abbreviated schedule (due to World War II).
The assistant baseball coach at Purdue during Rooney's tenure was Ray Schalk. Rooney worked closely with Schalk as the latter was a former Major League Baseball catcher for the Chicago White Sox.
