The Baltimore Orioles are floundering with a dismal 13-22 record, placing them last in the AL East. General manager Mike Elias acknowledged the criticism of the team's performance this season, attributing some of it to bad luck with injuries and players not performing as expected. Despite being two years removed from a successful 100-win season, the Orioles face challenges that seem unlike the rebuilding teams below them in the standings. Their offseason decisions, such as not re-signing star pitcher Corbin Burnes and sticking with current players, have drawn scrutiny amid their struggles.
It's hard to push back on criticism that we didn't do enough when we're in this spot right now. I think we've had a lot of bad breaks, but again, I didn't expect anywhere near this degree of injuries and then just some of the underperformance that we've gotten that I hope is temporary for a lot of guys. This is toward the extreme of outcomes.
Underperformance does not even begin to describe what this year has been, and things don't appear to be getting any better anytime soon.
