The Colorado Rockies, currently struggling with a record of 6-33, suffered a humiliating defeat against the Padres, losing 21-0. This defeat ties them with the 1988 Orioles for the worst start in Major League Baseball history through 39 games since 1900. Despite the support from General Manager Bill Schmidt for manager Bud Black, it appears they are on track for a third consecutive 100-loss season. Schmidt expressed frustration but noted that the team is working hard and believes they can turn the season around.
"I think our guys are still playing hard, and that's what I look at," Schmidt told the Denver Post. "Guys are working hard every day, they come with energy, for the most part. I don't think we are [at that point of firing Black]."
"I feel for the fans, I feel for the people around here," Schmidt said. "I know we are better than we have played, but we are not good right now. We have to battle through it and get to the other side."
