Tanner Banks, who struggled to secure a Division I college baseball position, found success in the Major Leagues after developing through Salt Lake Community College. He credits coach Dave Nelson for shaping his skills and mechanics, which allowed him to improve from mid-80s to low 90s fastballs. Despite facing challenges like injuries and switching throwing hands, Banks remained focused and intentional in his development. Entering his fourth major league season with the Philadelphia Phillies, his story exemplifies resilience and adaptation in a competitive sport.
"I was not ready to make that jump to Division I," Banks recalled. He attributes his eventual success in Major League Baseball to crucial developmental years at Salt Lake Community College and the influence of Coach Nelson.
"He was throwing mid-80s in high school and we shortened up his arm angle and he went up to the low 90s," said Coach Dave Nelson regarding Banks' impressive development at Salt Lake Community College.
"Over the next couple of years, I broke both of my wrists. I broke my left wrist and I had to learn to do everything right-handed," Banks shared, describing the challenges he faced in his journey.
"His personality does not change. He is level-headed. Two, he is very intentional about his mechanics," Nelson explained the key attributes that helped Tanner Banks excel as a pitcher.
