Troy Lesesne emphasizes the need for D.C. United to enhance their in-possession play to become an elite MLS team. Following a 2-2 draw against Toronto FC, he acknowledges their effective high-pressing style but insists on the importance of improving against packed defenses. He notes that while off-the-ball behaviors have solidified, the team struggles with ball retention, leading to chances for opponents. Meanwhile, Chicago Fire, after a disappointing start, aims to improve their performance, focusing on mindset and defensive adjustments.
I think the foundation we talked about last year, that we laid, I think we've built off that in terms of our off-the-ball behaviour, it was really solid.
On the ball, that's still very much in development, we gave the ball away far too often and where Toronto's chances came were on attacking transitions for them.
A lot can be improved, but I think again, the effort, the mindset of the guys was good. But we have to threaten the backline more.
The goal was to keep making progress and I think the team has made progress throughout this preseason.
