Following Cardinal Robert Prevost's election as Pope Leo XIV, questions arose about his baseball allegiances between the Chicago Cubs and White Sox. His brother confirmed the new pope's support for the White Sox, while acknowledging a divided family background—his mother was a Cubs fan, and his father favored the St. Louis Cardinals. Father Gregory Sakowicz, rector of Holy Name Cathedral, spoke about the serendipity of the announcement coinciding with the sun shining in Chicago, humorously considering it divine providence.
But the household was split: mom was a Cubs fan and his father was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Father Gregory Sakowicz remarked to the Associated Press that the sun came out in Chicago when the new pope was announced, a coincidence he described as "God's way of remaining anonymous."
He said he was "happily shocked," and also wondered if the new Pope supported the Cubs or Sox.
When a journalist said she'd heard he's for the Cubs, Sakowicz chuckled. "God bless him," he said.
