Lucy and Mish, two young bears at Wildwood Devon conservation park, escaped their enclosure and broke into the food store, where they indulged in a week's worth of honey and other snacks before falling asleep. Staff followed safety protocols, securing visitors while monitoring the bears with CCTV. The playful bears preferred sweets over vegetables, creating a mess during their snack time. Their training allowed staff to easily recall them back to their enclosure when needed, demonstrating the effectiveness of positive reinforcement.
"The bears bypassed the vegetables to head straight for the sweet treats. Just like kids," Habben laughed, highlighting their preference for honey and snacks over healthy food.
"Upon learning about the two escapees, staff quickly escorted the 16 visitors on-site to a secure building," following strict safety protocols in response to the bear incident.
"They ripped the lid off the plastic container and took turns dipping their paws into the golden goo, making a right old mess," Habben added, vividly describing the playful antics.
"Mish immediately ran back into the enclosure at the sound of door sliding,' showcasing the effectiveness of the conditioning work with the bears.
