A new set of offseason OTA workouts begins for the Chicago Bears, continuing Caleb Williams’ development. Quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett wants Williams to “do less” by emphasizing simple, reliable throws that support high passing production. The goal is to work through progressions and release the ball on time rather than constantly creating or extending plays. Improvisation remains valuable, especially in late-game situations, but the coaching focus is on reducing unnecessary difficulty during earlier downs. Williams’ completion rate dropped to 58.1% in his second year after 62.5% as a rookie, suggesting that easier throws could help maintain performance and reduce the need for constant improvisational effort.
"One of their main messages to Williams this offseason, as quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett put it recently, is simply "Do less." There are times the Bears need Williams to be that one-of-one gunslinger, especially when they're desperate late in games. But they'd like to see a lot more of the simple throws that the NFL's best rely on to build 300-yard passing performances."
""We don't have to work as hard for our money," Barrett explained. "There's times where we could just work through our progression and get the ball out on time instead of having to create and extend plays.""
"I love the magic that comes with Caleb Williams improvising and extending plays. I do not want the Bears to coach that out of his system. But I understand where Barrett is coming from in wanting his quarterback to take the play in front of him every once in a while to make it easier on Williams in the long run."
"Because, for all the highlights Williams created with his off-the-cuff plays, his completion percentage took a dip to 58.1 percent in Year 2 after posting a 62.5 percent as a rookie. Perhaps taking some easier throws early in games will save the Iceman from needing to go into Superman mode la"
