"Perplexity's GenAI Products generate outputs that are identical or substantially similar to the Chicago Tribune's content,"
"Upon information and belief, Perplexity has unlawfully copied millions of copyrighted Chicago Tribune stories, videos, images, and other works to power its products and tools."
"skip the links"
The Chicago Tribune filed a copyright infringement lawsuit in New York federal court alleging Perplexity AI copied and reproduced Tribune reporting across its chatbot and new search engine without authorization. The complaint alleges Perplexity used often fully reproduced reporting—and sometimes inaccurate reproductions—to generate answers that bypass links to the Tribune's website, diverting traffic and threatening subscription and advertising revenue. The lawsuit states Perplexity's GenAI products produce outputs identical or substantially similar to Tribune content and asserts that Perplexity unlawfully copied millions of Tribune stories, videos, images, and other works to power its products and tools. Perplexity launched the Comet browser and had promoted a strategy to help users "skip the links."
