Mikey Varas will lead the U.S. men's national team on an interim basis during the September international window, giving Mauricio Pochettino time to transition.
While Pochettino has agreed to succeed Berhalter as the permanent USMNT coach, a contract has not yet been signed, pending resolution of his situation with Chelsea.
Varas, recently part of Berhalter's staff, has a strong track record with the U.S. U20 team, including a Concacaf Championship and a World Cup quarterfinal appearance.
The U.S. will host Canada and New Zealand in friendlies, where Varas will take charge as interim coach, creating a transition period for Pochettino.
