Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League after a 2-1 defeat at Sunderland, missing European football. Pat Nevin expects Xabi Alonso’s arrival to rebuild the club and to reflect lessons learned by the owners. He believes Alonso will be able to sign players he can trust immediately rather than relying on a model of bringing in young players and hoping they develop. Nevin also expects a change in management culture, with Alonso given real responsibility instead of being limited to coaching while others dictate decisions. He believes Alonso can succeed if the promised backing and control are delivered.
"Yes they do [need to change philosophy] and this time I think they will. They have got a top-level manager in Alonso, who doesn't need the job, he could have waited and probably got Liverpool. There's no way in the world they're going to get him some 19-year-olds who will be great in three years' time, especially after what he's just been through at Real Madrid."
