The government intends to reduce the cost of electric vehicles (EVs) to encourage more drivers to transition. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander announced potential grants for EV buyers and funding for charge points in areas without driveways. While the Conservative Party has supported the investment, they expressed concern over the readiness of families to adopt EVs. Alexander acknowledged that the high cost of EVs is a barrier and indicated that the government would make announcements regarding affordability soon. She also mentioned she does not currently own an EV herself.
"We are going to be making some announcements later this week on how we make it more affordable for people to buy an electric vehicle."
"It was right that the government thinks in the round about what we can do to tackle both of the issues, on charging and on the upfront cost of purchase."
"The high cost of electric vehicles was making people wary..."
"I don't have an electric car... like millions of people in this country - I bought a new car about six years ago."
