Australians are buying cars that consume more petrol than the fuel efficiencies marketed to them, while many vehicles also emit more toxic fumes than manufacturers advertise.
Nine out of 15 vehicles tested consumed more fuel in real-world testing than their advertised lab test results, with discrepancies as high as 7% in fuel consumption.
Some popular models like Toyota's Corolla Cross hybrid 2024, Isuzu Ute D-Max, and Ford Ranger had significant discrepancies in fuel consumption in real-world testing compared to lab-calculated rates.
The testing by the AAA also revealed that some vehicles, including Audi's Q3 2023 and Hyundai's Tucson 2023, consumed less fuel in real-world testing than their advertised rates.
