The vicious side of an iconic San Francisco ride

"Wooooo!" exclaimed a bunch of seated people without seat belts in an open-air cart hurling over the steep street. This reporter started feeling sweaty. Visions of falling off and cracking my skull flashed. Breathing became a challenge.
After all, it appeared on the city's hilly streets in 1873, a full 86 years before Swedish engineer Nils Bohlin invented the modern three-point seat belt.
It was only my third experience on a cable car in the city where I was born, and it was the first time going on board since approximately 1990.
