Tesla has commenced the pilot phase of its long-anticipated robotaxi program in Austin, Texas. Initially, a limited number of existing Tesla vehicles—marked with a 'robotaxi' logo and equipped with a human safety driver—took to the streets for paid rides involving a select group of analysts and investors. CEO Elon Musk emphasized the achievements of Tesla's AI and chip teams, marking this launch as the product of a decade of development. However, the initiative has been described as low-key, with a limited operational area, and the absence of the much-hyped Cybercab.
Musk congratulated Tesla's artificial intelligence and chip design teams on the launch in a post on X, writing that it was "culmination of a decade of hard work".
Forrester analyst Paul Miller described the launch of the pilot as a "low-key affair". He noted that only a handful of vehicles are available right now.
