"will also assess the approach used by Tesla to supply power to the door locks and the reliability of the applicable power supplies,"
Tesla is working on a redesign of its door handles to combine the electronic and manual door-release mechanisms into a single button to improve intuitiveness for occupants in "a panic situation." The consolidated control aims to simplify exit procedures during power loss or emergencies. A series of incidents involved people injured or killed after being unable to open doors following loss of power, particularly after crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received more than 140 consumer complaints about stuck or malfunctioning doors since 2018 and opened an investigation covering about 174,290 2021 Model Y SUVs to assess power delivery to door locks and supply reliability. Franz von Holzhausen has led Tesla design for 17 years.
