In approximately half of the crashes analyzed by the NHTSA, Autopilot was found not to be in use or the crash was unrelated to EA22002. Of the remaining crashes, trends included collisions with adequate reaction time, roadway departures due to driver's inputs, and departures in low traction conditions.
Tesla met with NHTSA and issued a defect report with a recall for all vehicles. An over-the-air update (Recall 23V-838) focused on enhancing driver attentiveness through visual alerts, simplified Autosteer engagement, additional safety checks, and potential suspension if driver neglects warnings.
