Say What You Want, But The Tesla Model Y Was Still The King Of EVs In 2025
"In 2025, Tesla sold over 357,000 Model Ys in the U.S., according to estimates out Tuesday from Cox Automotive. (Tesla doesn't break out its sales by region, so we have to go off of third-party analyses.) That's a 4% decline from 2024, when Tesla sold an estimated 373,000 Model Ys. Despite the dip, Tesla's crossover accounted for 28% of all U.S. EV sales in 2025. And it claimed a whopping 39.5% market share in the final quarter of the year."
"The company has steadily lost share in the face of growing competition from cars like the Cadillac Lyriq, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. But it's still the king. The Tesla Model 3 came in second place in 2025, with approximately 192,000 units sold. Roughly four in 10 EV buyers last year went home in a Model 3 or a Model Y."
Tesla experienced challenging years with stagnating sales, a Cybertruck that failed to reverse the trend, and declining public perception among core buyers. Despite these issues, Tesla dominated the U.S. electric-vehicle market in 2025. The Model Y sold over 357,000 units, a 4% drop from 2024, yet accounted for 28% of U.S. EV sales and 39.5% market share in Q4. The Model 3 sold roughly 192,000 units, and combined Model 3/Y purchases comprised about 40% of EV buyers. Growing competition from Cadillac, Hyundai, Ford and GM reduced Tesla's share, but substantial gaps remain.
