Piastri: McLaren team orders call was 'fair'
"We said a slow pit stop was part of racing, I don't really get what changed here -- but if you want me to do it, I'll do it."
"It's something that we'll discuss -- we have discussed it before. I think today was a fair request. Lando qualified ahead, was ahead the whole race and lost that spot through no fault of his own. I said what I had to say on the radio. And once I got the second request, then I'm not going to"
McLaren delayed both cars' pit stops at the Italian Grand Prix seeking advantage from a potential late safety car. The team called Oscar Piastri into the pits before teammate Lando Norris, breaking the convention of favouring the lead car, to protect Piastri's podium from Charles Leclerc. Norris suffered a slow front-left tyre change and emerged behind Piastri. The team instructed Piastri to slow and let Norris retake second place; Piastri complied while expressing confusion over the change. Norris gained three championship points; Piastri's lead stands at 31 points with eight races remaining. The team intends to review the decision ahead of Azerbaijan.
