Personalised plate boom: drivers and investors snap up unique registrations
Briefly

Sales of personalized car number plates have surged, doubling since 2014 to over 1.2 million transactions in 2024. Driven by both DVLA sales and private exchanges, these plates are increasingly seen as valuable assets rather than just personal identifiers. The DVLA alone generated £276 million last year, while the second-hand market has expanded rapidly, including a significant rise in ownership transfers. Many buyers, like Rob Nicholls, see them as tangible investments, although many also appreciate their sentimental value.
"They do seem to be increasingly popular. Is there a value? Yes. Can it increase in value? Yes. I'm probably going to buy more because it's an interesting, tangible asset."
"The number of transactions for plates already in circulation has almost tripled since 2014, reaching around 800,000 in 2024, including sales and any changes to ownership details."
