An extensive Garda Roads Policing Operation from Thursday morning to Friday resulted in one fatality and 14 serious injuries. During the operation, more than 830 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoints were established, leading to over 4,000 breath tests and 270 oral fluid tests, with 167 arrests made for suspected intoxicated driving. Speed violations were rampant, with numerous drivers clocked significantly above speed limits. Additionally, various Fixed Charge Notices were issued for other infractions, such as using mobile phones while driving. Gardaí emphasized safe driving practices to reduce incidents and promote road safety.
An Garda Síochána continue to appeal to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to slow down and to always choose a speed that is appropriate to the driving conditions, to wear your seatbelt and keep your eyes always on the road.
Over the course of the operation, gardaí conducted more than 830 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints, resulting in 167 arrests for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
