Mobileye has announced its decision to cease the development of next-generation frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) lidars, a prediction made by Elon Musk years ago.
Elon Musk, a critic of Lidar, argues that it is unnecessary for self-driving cars, a belief that Tesla has adopted, favoring camera-based systems instead.
The discontinuation of Mobileye’s lidar division will lead to job losses for approximately 100 employees, but it is expected to positively impact their financials in the long run.
Despite halting lidar development, Mobileye will continue its work on in-house imaging radar, which is anticipated to enter production next year.
