I'm a retiree living in Mexico who owns a BYD and a Tesla. Here's why I prefer the Chinese car.
Briefly

John Romer, a retired radiologist, splits his time between Mexico and the US. He prefers his BYD Song Plus hybrid, praising its efficiency and comfort, while noting the limited EV infrastructure in Mexico. Romer's shift towards BYD reflects the growing popularity of Chinese EVs in Mexico, contrasting with the tariffs that prevent Chinese manufacturers from easily entering the US market. After considering the options, he ultimately plans to gift his Tesla to his grandson, favoring the hybrid during his extended stays in Mexico.
I've had my BYD Song Plus hybrid for six or seven months, and it hasn't had a single issue. It's extremely efficient - I'm probably getting over 40 miles per gallon.
Chinese cars have become extremely popular in Mexico, so when the time came to buy a new car, BYD was the logical choice.
I would have gone with a pure EV, but Mexico doesn't have the charging infrastructure yet that they have in Europe or the US.
I prefer the BYD and am considering giving the Tesla to my grandson.
