How Hyundai Plans To Launch Its First Extended-Range EVs
"We see them more useful for larger vehicles, because basically, you remove your range anxiety, and then you can, you can get [the] longer distances which are driven by the American consumer,"
"They save money on gas, and then [we see] the model of using it in the day and charging overnight, very simple, like your phone. So no problem."
"If you want to go for a long weekend and you have to make a lot of miles, you have certain anxiety, because you don't know if the charger is going to work, etc, etc. So then you need a different technology."
Hyundai will introduce extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) in 2027 that pair an EV platform and lithium-ion battery with a gasoline engine to recharge the battery and extend range. The EREVs will use a smaller battery than many conventional EVs while delivering EV-like driving experiences and targeting roughly 600 miles of range. The program will prioritize larger vehicles to address long-distance range anxiety and American consumers' longer-trip usage. Hyundai will also pursue expanded fast-charging access and other measures to support day-to-day home charging and long-distance flexibility.
