GM's Super Cruise Aims To Go Beyond Tesla In 2028 With LIDAR, Eyes-Off Driving
"And soon, seeing the road ahead may not even be a requirement. Photo by: Patrick George GM plans to add "eyes-free" functionality to Super Cruise by 2028, the company said, meaning that users will be able to take their hands off the wheel but will no longer be required to stay focused on the road when the system is engaged. This function will debut on the Cadillac Escalade IQand that means the current model, not a new one, a GM spokesperson confirmed."
"This update would be a step closer to much deeper autonomous driving assistance. Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving require the driver to keep their eyes on the road. Only Mercedes-Benz offers a comparable system, but it's much more limited. Super Cruise has been an objective win for General Motors. The automated driving assistance system, which lets you take your hands off the wheel while you monitor the car and the road ahead, keeps picking up hundreds of thousands of subscribers when their trial periods end."
General Motors plans to enable an 'eyes-free' mode for Super Cruise by 2028, allowing drivers to remove hands from the wheel and not remain focused on the road while engaged. The functionality will debut on the current Cadillac Escalade IQ and will use LIDAR in addition to camera, radar and GPS sensors. The upgrade would elevate Super Cruise to a Level 3 advanced driving assistance system from its current Level 2 capability. Super Cruise already permits hands-off driving on over 750,000 miles of compatible U.S. and Canadian highways and has grown subscriber counts rapidly. GM intends to expand the system to many more models.
