EA is reportedly hitting the brakes on the Need for Speed franchise

The Need for Speed franchise has reportedly been shelved by Electronic Arts, with indications that it may not see new developments in the near future. Recently, the company's decision to shut down the online servers for Need for Speed Rivals has highlighted the shift in focus towards the Battlefield franchise. Criterion Games, the developer of Need for Speed, has reassigned most of its workforce, leaving only a small team for the racing series. Electronic Arts has reportedly "shelved Need for Speed" and is "quietly parking" the series according to contributions from Matthew Everingham, a car culture photographer.
There have been significant internal changes at EA, including the decision to shut down online servers for Need for Speed Rivals and the reallocation of Criterion Games staff to Battlefield.
The Need for Speed franchise began in 1994 and has produced over 20 games, with the latest title, Need for Speed Unbound, launched in December 2022, receiving a Mixed rating on Steam.
