Cybertrucks' faulty trim prompts biggest recall yet, stokes Tesla investor panic
Briefly

Tesla is recalling all Cybertruck units sold due to a potential issue where exterior panels could detach while driving, posing a risk to other motorists. Initially recognized in January, the issue escalated with increasing social media complaints, prompting the recall. This affects Cybertrucks manufactured between November 13, 2023, and February 27, 2025. Tesla estimates that over 46,000 vehicles could need repairs, though only 1% are likely defective. The fix involves enhanced adhesive and reinforcing the panel's attachment. Tesla will notify dealers and customers about the recall effectively starting May 19, 2023.
If the panel separates from the vehicle while in drive, it could create a road hazard for following motorists and increase their risk of injury or a collision.
By March, social media complaints were getting louder as Tesla wrapped up its probe, concluding that a voluntary recall was necessary.
Potentially more than 46,000 vehicles could require the fix, Tesla said, while conservatively estimating that only 1 percent of cars are likely defective.
The repair replaces the adhesive used for the panel with one that's more durable and reinforces the attachment with a stud welded to the stainless panel.
