Chinese EV Maker Plans 620-Mile Solid-State Battery Cars In 2026
"Not for much longer, though, as multiple automakers are racing to bring them to the market. Stellantis and Factorial said that a demonstration fleet of solid-state-powered Dodge Charger Daytona EVs will hit the road next year. But now China's Dongfeng has upped the ante. It's the latest Chinese carmaker to say solid-state is coming sooner than expected. The automaker said that its first production EV powered by a new generation of solid-state batteries will hit the road next September."
"Dongfeng's new battery has a stated energy density of 350 watt-hours/kilogram, whereas Stellantis' upcoming pack is touted as offering 375 Wh/kg. In other words, not the best in terms of energy density, but not too shabby either. Dongfeng Automobile is developing production solid-state electric vehicles with a liquid-less battery claiming over 621 miles (1,000 km) range. The first model will go on sale next September. The solid-state battery has been tested from -22°F to 266°F. The battery's energy density is stated at 350 watt-hours per kilogram. The design uses a multi-component layout with a high-capacity ternary cathode, a silicon-carbon anode and an oxide polymer composite solid electrolyte. Stellantis advertises a 375 Wh/kg pack for its upcoming solid-state offering. Multiple automakers, including Stellantis and Factorial, plan solid-state demonstrations and limited fleets next year.
