Comac, China's state-owned planemaker, is aspiring to challenge Boeing and Airbus' long-standing duopoly in commercial aviation. Its most important aircraft, the C919, directly competes with the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. Founded in 2008, Comac has navigated various challenges but is benefitting from growing air travel in China and global supply chain issues. The company’s ARJ21 aircraft, later renamed C909, has seen some success with 145 deliveries to airlines. The C919 has significant demand and offers a longer range, accommodating 156 to 168 passengers.
Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury has even said the industry could go "from a duopoly to a potential triopoly."
With air travel growing rapidly in China and supply chain problems blighting the aviation industry globally, Comac's rise comes at a perfect time.
Eight years after its foundation, Comac's first plane entered commercial service. Initially known as the ARJ21, it was later renamed the C909 to unify the company's branding.
The C919 is similar to Airbus' A320 family and Boeing's 737, a single-aisle aircraft with longer range, capable of carrying between 156 and 168 passengers.
