According to Argonne National Laboratory analysis, California has the highest share of light-duty plug-in electric vehicle registrations at 4.3%, up from 2.5% in 2021.
The District of Columbia (DC) follows California with a 3.5% plug-in share, and Hawaii with a 2.8% plug-in share, based on data from the DOE's Vehicle Technologies Office.
In California, plug-ins accounted for 25% of new car sales in Q1 2024 and throughout 2023, with more than one rechargeable car for every 25 cars on the road.
The electrification process takes time; the U.S. has seen progress over 15 years since the introduction of the first Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt in December 2010.
